Amsterdam

Nyt oli sitten vuorossa Amsterdam. Monta kertaa olen tuon pääkaupungin ohi mennyt mutta nyt päätin pistää ranttaliksi ja käydä kattomassa tuo legendaarinen mesta. Nukuttuani normaaliin tapaani hieman pommiin pääsin lopulta liikkeelle ja otin junan kohti Amsterdamia. Matkaan tuli mutka kun joku onneton oli keksinyt ottaa matsia junan kanssa... jalkaisin. Jouduin siksi vaihtamaan junaa Utrechtissä ja saavuin vielä hieman myöhemmin perille kuin oli tarkoitus koska tämä toinen juna kulki kiertotietä alkuperäisellä reitillä olevan sotkun vuoksi.

Myöhäinen saapumiseni ei ollut kuitenkaan hirveä haitta, sillä havaitsin että Amsterdamin vilkas liikenne ei ollut ollenkaan mun makuun. Polkupyöriä oli miljoona ja autoja vähintään yhtä paljon... ja kaikki tuntuivat tahallaan ajavan päälleni :P Onneksi ilta oli jo pimenemään päin ja pääsin ehjänä hotellille.

hotellini oli mallia halvin tarjous voitti... mutta hintaansa nähden se oli ihan jees. hotellivalintaani vaikutti hinnan lisäksi myös sen sijainti. pääsin kätevästi kävellen joka paikkaan, mikä helpotti elämääni huomattavasti sillä vihaan joukkoliikennettä :P Hotellin hintaan sisältyi myös aamiainen, mikä 35 euron hintalapulla oli mielestäni aika kova voitto. Puitteiltaan hotelli oli kyllä aika ränsistynyt, eikä sieltä saanut pyyhettä... mutta ikkunastakin aukesi kiva näkymä kanaalin suuntaan. Tarkoitukseni ei kuitenkaan ollut viettää aikaa hotellissa, joten siirryin saman tien ulkosalle ja suuntasin kulkuni kohti nähtävyyksiä.

Amsterdamin keskusta löysin muutaman hienon rakennuksen, kuten Dam ja sen vastapäätä sijaitseva hieno obeliski, joka ilmeisesti oli jokin muistomerkki toisen maailmansodan kaatuneille. Jostain syystä minua kuitenkin kiehtoivat enemmän kaupungin keskellä ristiin rastiin virtaavat pienet kanaalit ja pikkukadut. Aitoa eurooppalaista arkkitehtuuria, gotta love it. Varsinkin kun ilta alkoi hämärtyä, ja ihmiset katosivat kaduilta, oli tunnelma aivan mahtava. Öinen Amsterdam on aivan mahtava kokemus, jos ei pelkää pimeää.

Myös yöaikaan amsterdamistakin löytyy kyllä elämää, erityisesti punaisten lyhtyjen alueelta. Koko alue on punaisen hehkun peitossa eikä sitä oikeastaan voi missata. Paikka ei ehkä ihan sovi perheen pienimmille, mutta on kyllä maineensa veroinen nähtävyys itsessään. Poiketen ehkä yleisestä luulosta, on alue yksi amsterdamin turvallisimmista, sillä alue kuhisee turvamiehiä ja poliiseja. Alueella on valokuvaaminen kuitenkin ymmärrettävistä syistä kielletty, siksipä jouduin tyytymään velohehkun taltioimiseen kännykällä varovaisen etäisyyden päästä, ettei reissuni mene kameraani onkiessa kanaalista. Näyteikkunoiden tarjonnan lisäksi alueelta löytyy myös paljon hyviä baareja ja ravintoloita jotka suorastaan kutsuvat luokseen musiikin pauhatessa. Pakko sanoa että ennakkoluuloistani poiketen ihastuin koko paikkaan ihan toisella tapaa kuin mihinkään muuhun kaupunkiin. Ehdottomasti kokemisen arvoinen reissu.

Now it was time for me to head for Amsterdam. Many times Ive just passed through here, but now I decided to make an effort and get to know the city itself. I slept a bit late, but finally managed to get myself in train and on my way. Trip got a bit complicated tho, as someone had decided to challenge the train... on foot. Because of this I had to change a train in Utrecht and take another route around the mess they had left behind.

My late arrival wasnt really a bad thing though, as I noticed that the busy amsterdam traffic wasnt really my cup of tea. Millions of bicycles zig zagging around me with cars racing past me... it made me feel like Im being trying to get hit on purpose :P Luckily it was already getting darker and quieter and I managed to make my way to the hotel.

My hotel was one of the cheapest there was, but still it was quite ok. It was also on good location, which meant I could go everywhere I wanted on foot... which was good as I hate public transport. The price also included a breakfast, which made the 35 euro room even more of a good deal. The hotel was quite old and in poor shape tho, and they didnt provide me with a towel... but the window had a nice view to the canal. My intention was not to stay in the hotel, however... so I headed outside to see the sights.

I found some very nice buildings from the amsterdam central, such as the Dam and the obelisk facing it on the other side of the square. The obelisk was appearantly some sort of monument for the fallen in WWII. For some reason tho, I found the small canals crossing the city and the little streets more appealing than the tourist sights... I just love european architechture. Especially when the night was getting darker and people disappeared from the streets, the mood in the city streets was just breathtaking. Amsterdam at night is a wonderful experience, if youre not afraid of the dark :P

There is also some nightlive in Amsterdam though, especially in the red lights district. The wholre area is covered in red light and its almost impossible to miss it. It might not be the best area for the family's youngest, but sure stands up to its reputation. Unlike some might think, the area is actually very safe to be in... with all the bodyguards and police officers walking around Id say you wont find a more safer place. Taking photos is forbidden though, which is why I had to settle with a very careful shot with my cell phone about the lights. After all, I didnt wanna spend my night diving my camera out of the canal :P The area has a lot to offer in terms of eye candy, but also has some good bars and restaurants which really invite people in with music and cheerful mood. I gotta say that despite my beliefs, I fell in love with this city in a whole different way than I ever have with any other. Definately a trip worth exploring.
